Where to Buy Wallpaper in Cheshire & South Manchester (2026 Guide)

A working decorator's guide to wallpaper shops across the Cheshire and South Manchester corridor — and the online retailers that beat the high street for designer brands.

Why This Guide Exists

Clients regularly ask us where to buy the paper before we hang it. The honest answer is that the Cheshire / South Manchester corridor doesn't have a deep network of dedicated wallpaper showrooms — the action is split between a few high-street options for mid-market browsing, designer showrooms in Manchester city centre, and (for designer brands) online retailers and direct-from-brand purchasing. This guide is a working decorator's view, organised by tier.

High-Street & Big-Box (Mid-Market)

John Lewis & Partners (Cheadle / Cheshire Oaks)

The most reliable high-street option for mid-market designer paper across the catchment. Stocks Harlequin, Cole & Son select ranges, Morris & Co, and the John Lewis & Partners own brand. In-store sample service. The Cheadle store is the closest substantial wallpaper department for the South Manchester corridor.

Dunelm (multiple — Altrincham, Stockport, Trafford Centre)

Budget to mid-market paper. Own-brand ranges and licensed designs. Good for first-paper buyers and budget feature walls. Sample service in-store.

B&Q (Cheadle, Stockport, Warrington)

Budget paper — Graham & Brown, Superfresco Easy, own brand. Good for low-stakes feature walls, rental refresh, or any project where the paper is one element rather than the centrepiece. Sample service in-store and online.

Wickes (Cheadle, Altrincham, Stockport)

Similar tier to B&Q. Useful for paste-the-wall starter ranges and budget jobs.

Homebase (multiple)

Mid-market with some designer collaborations. Smaller wallpaper sections than B&Q or John Lewis but worth a visit for occasional finds.

Independent & Specialist (Premium Mid-Market)

Local interior design boutiques (Wilmslow, Knutsford, Hale)

The corridor has a network of small independent interiors and lifestyle shops — concentrated around Wilmslow town centre, Knutsford, and Hale. These typically carry a curated selection of designer papers and can order from the wider catalogues of Cole & Son, Little Greene, Farrow & Ball and similar. The selection changes by season — call ahead to confirm specific ranges.

Specialist paint and wallpaper showrooms (Manchester city centre)

Manchester city centre has a handful of dedicated paint-and-paper showrooms in the Northern Quarter and around the city. These stock Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, and Designers Guild more reliably than the high street. Worth the trip if you're committing to a designer brand and want to see and touch samples in person.

Online — Designer Brands at the Best Prices

For most designer brands, online retailers offer the deepest selection and best prices. Trade discount accounts can usually be opened by decorators on your behalf if you want to save further.

Wallpaper Direct

The largest UK online wallpaper retailer. Carries virtually every mid-market and premium brand including Cole & Son, Little Greene, Farrow & Ball, Morris & Co, Sanderson, Harlequin, Designers Guild, and Zoffany. Sample service. Pricing typically 10–15% below high-street RRP.

I Love Wallpaper

Strong on contemporary and statement ranges. More affordable than dedicated designer retailers. Good for feature walls where the paper is the centrepiece.

The Wallpaper Bin

Discounted designer paper — often discontinued lines from major brands at significant discount. Worth checking if you're flexible on pattern or want a luxury brand at mid-market pricing.

Brand direct

For premium and HNW brands, direct from the manufacturer's website is often the right route:

  • Cole & Son: Full archive plus newer ranges. Trade discount available on application.
  • Little Greene: Heritage and contemporary collections.
  • Farrow & Ball: Premium positioning, full catalogue.
  • Sanderson Design Group brands: Sanderson, Morris & Co, Harlequin, Zoffany.
  • Designers Guild: Tricia Guild's ranges direct.

HNW & Bespoke — Showroom-Only or Direct Commission

The top tier of UK wallpaper is rarely sold through retailers. These brands work through interior designers or direct with the client via their London showrooms:

de Gournay

Hand-painted chinoiserie, silks, and bespoke commissions. London showroom (Pimlico Road) is the primary touchpoint. Often specified by interior designers. See our de Gournay installer service.

Fromental

Hand-painted and hand-embroidered. London-based atelier. Designer-led specification typical. See our Fromental installer service.

Phillip Jeffries

Grasscloth and natural-fibre wallcoverings. Showroom in London. Often specified through interior designers but available direct.

Iksel

Digitally printed murals from antique source artwork. Istanbul atelier, UK trade contacts available.

Pierre Frey

French atelier — printed papers, bespoke commissions. London showroom.

What to Check Before Buying

Whether high-street or designer brand, ask these questions before committing:

Roll quantity

Pattern-repeat matching eats more paper than you'd expect. Don't buy "exactly the right number" of rolls — buy 1-2 extra. Repeat orders may not match batch perfectly.

Batch number

Different production batches can have subtle colour variation. Order all rolls in the same batch — confirm on the product detail.

Paste type

Paste-the-wall or paste-the-paper? Check the wrapper or product page. Each requires different installation method — see our installation method guide.

Sample service

Most reputable retailers offer sample lengths for £4–£25. Always order a sample, tape it to the wall in the actual room, and live with it for 48 hours through different lighting before committing.

Return policy

Wallpaper return policies vary widely. Some retailers won't accept opened rolls. Confirm before ordering.

The Decorator Discount Question

Most premium and designer brands offer trade discounts to professional decorators (typically 10–25% off RRP). If you're hiring a wallpaper hanger anyway, ask whether they can supply at trade rates — we order on behalf of clients routinely and pass through the discount.

For HNW brands (de Gournay, Fromental etc.), commission pricing isn't discounted in the same way — the price is the price, regardless of how it's ordered.

What We Recommend

For most clients in the Cheshire / South Manchester corridor:

If you want to browse first

Visit John Lewis Cheadle, Dunelm Altrincham, or Wallpaper Direct online for sample service. Order 2-3 samples, live with them for 48 hours, then decide.

If you've already picked a designer brand

Order direct from the brand or via Wallpaper Direct. Or let us order for you at trade rates — we do this routinely and the saving usually covers the lining paper cost.

If you're considering an HNW commission

Work with an interior designer if you don't already. de Gournay and Fromental specifically work better through designer specification because of the commission complexity.
